Determining Your Candidacy for Dental Veneers
Good Oral Health
Candidates must also be in good oral health. If you suffer from gum disease, damaged teeth, or a dental infection, these conditions must be resolved prior to cosmetic treatment.
Sufficient Enamel
During your consultation, the dentist will examine your tooth enamel to make sure there is enough of this tissue to support veneers. Since a small amount of enamel is removed in order to allow traditional veneers to lay flush with surrounding teeth, you will need a sufficient amount of enamel. We also have prepless veneers that may be an option for patients with less enamel.
TMJ and Teeth Grinding
Porcelain veneers are not recommended for every patient, including those who suffer from temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder or bruxism (teeth grinding). However, if you have these conditions and use a mouth guard, you may be able to protect your veneers from damage.
A Closer Look at Your Options Prepared vs. Prepless Veneers
Prepless
These are usually only recommended for patients who need little to no alteration to their teeth in order to achieve natural-looking results. These are best suited for patients without misalignment and only minor aesthetic issues. Because they involve a much simpler procedure, they are easily reversible.
Prepared
Prepared veneers require the removal of some dental enamel, usually equal to the thickness of an eggshell. This allows the veneer to lay flush with surrounding teeth. If your dentist determines that a prepress veneer would protrude, or if you need a thicker veneer to conceal certain imperfections, a traditional veneer may be the better choice.
